SAT 영어 고득점자의 공부법

제일 먼저 SAT 에는 어떠한 문장이 출제되나를 알아야 합니다. 그러면 평소에 어떠한 종류의 책을 읽어야 도움이 되는지 쉽게 파악할 수 있기 때문입니다. 그리고 문제의 유형을 알아야 합니다.

SAT 영어 시험의 문제 유형은 언제나 같습니다.
갑자기 전혀 없었던 유형의 문제가 출제되는 경우는 없습니다.

SAT 시험에는 일반적으로 100~850자 분량의 예문이 약 9개 정도 등장합니다.

또 이러한 예문은 사회 자연과학 소설이나 전기 등의 일반 문학서적 인문학 서적 등에서 발췌됩니다. 특히 반드시 예문 중 하나는 특정 인종에 대한 언급이 있음도 알아두어야 할 사항입니다.

그렇다면 이런 예문들은 특히 어떤 서적들에서 주로 발췌되는지 알아둔다면 자녀들이 SAT 준비에도 도움이 될 것입니다. 이 부분은 자녀들이 직접 이해할 수 있도록 영어로 정리했습니다.

Most passages are drawn from the following four basic categories.

. Social Sciences: These passages deal with topics drawn from history sociology and government. Recent examples include articles about the emergence of women artist during the Renaissance and differing views on the value of public opinion polls.

. Natural Sciences : drawn from botany geology and astronomy etc. Recent examples include articles about meteors and the relationships between plants.

. Literary fiction or Narrative: excerpts from novels short stories and memoirs. Examples include excerpts from Sula by Tomi Morrison and Efforts of Affection: A Memoir of Marianne Moore by Elizabeth Bishop.

. Humanities: drawn from art literature music philosophy and folklore. Recent examples include articles about jazz and the characteristics of Bohemians.

Many Students complain that SAT passages come from obscure sources no one could possibly find. This is not true however. The SAT test writers choose passages from highly regarded books. Most of the selections come from paperback books that can be found in any good college book store.

▶ 문제의 유형

1. General questions General questions test your overall understanding of a passage. They usually ask you to identify the main idea theme or purpose of a passage. Or distinguish the author's tone mood or attitude.

2. Vocabulary-in-context questions These questions ask you to infer the meaning of a word or phrase from its context. They are much like sentence completions.

3. Specific questions These questions ask you about a specific paragraph sentence or phrase. Specific questions comprise about two-thirds of all critical reading questions. There are two basic types of specific questions.
